Ghee Happy!

Project: 3D Animated Series

Client: Netflix Animation

Responsibilities: Color Design, Illustration, Vector Shapes

Ghee Happy is a show created by Sanjay Patel— featuring a cast of Hindu deities set in a preschool, learning about cultural and childhood concepts alike. Through the episodes, kids learn about the story of Karthikeya and Ganesha, Dandiya Stick dances, and Diwali traditions.

I served as a color designer, bringing designs into final paint as 2D show assets, adding patterning/graphics, and preparing them for vendor studios with turnarounds and texture callouts.

Systems Thinking in an Animated World

Complicated concepts had to be explained in easily understandable ways for our preschool audience— so a structured visual system was used to package these lessons in an approachable way. Culturally specific visuals were adapted into pill shapes and softer colors to maintain consistency.

I had the role of cleaning these character designs up with vector shapes and then painting them to represent both color and textures.

Character designs by Chris O Hara, Ryan Matias, and Brenden Merien.

Characters

Color sketches that laid out different ideas before presentation— these served as a way to work through what was working, and what successes and failures to address before review.

I had the role of color and texture for these evironments, bringing them to final paint.

Environment designs by Derek Ortega, Leonard Hung, Jesse Tise, and Daniella Rosu-Ortiz.

Environments

Color sketches are again crucial to consider for the surrounding elements as well— and was a way to ensure that things were roughed out and tested before they were brought to final.

Day/Night States

When considering culturally significant events to our audience, several nighttime traditions came to mind. I wanted to ensure that each environment would be able to handle any storytelling changes, so I introduced day and night states to significant locations.
